Argentine Nationality Option for Children of Native Argentinians Born Abroad
Documentation to be submitted (under 18 years old):
- Original Birth Certificate of the applicant showing the full names of the Argentine native parent/s, as they appear in the ID card (DNI), and the name of the foreign parent if applicable. The original document will not be returned to the applicant, as it will be added to the Birth Registration Act in the Civil Registry Book of this Consular Office. Important: If the applicant was born outside this Consular District, you must submit the original Birth Certificate to request, according to current regulations, the corresponding registration of birth to the Consular Office with jurisdiction over the place of birth of the applicant.
- Birth Certificate (Birth Certificate is not acceptable; the original Certified Birth Certificate by the Civil Registry must be submitted) of the Argentine native parent. In the case of a foreign parent, a valid passport is required.
- ID card (card format, the only valid document to prove identity) of the Argentine parent/s with Change of Address in Canada, Law 17,671, Section IV, Art. 47.
Incomplete documentation will not be accepted under any circumstances.
Documentation to be submitted (18 years and older): Since you are over 18 years old, you are solely responsible for the Nationality Option procedure.

- Valid passport of the applicant.

General Information:
- The Argentine Nationality Option can be carried out by the person, if over 18 years old, or by their parents, if under 18 years old, at the Consulate in their jurisdiction.
- In case one of the parents has passed away, the original Death Certificate must be submitted.
- If one of the parents has custody by court order/judicial agreement, exercising parental responsibility for the applicant, the relevant document must be submitted.
- To initiate the Nationality Option procedure, the first step is to send a digital copy of the documentation to consular_cgvan@cancilleria.gob.ar.
- After analyzing the documentation, if it is sufficient, the Consulate will contact you to schedule an appointment.
- When submitting the complete documentation for the Nationality Option procedure, Consular Fees are not required. You will be notified in due course about these requirements and the original documentation that must be presented on the day of the appointment.
- There is no established time limit to visit our Office in Vancouver to sign the Notarial Acts, but they must be signed before the end of the fiscal year, i.e., before December 31 of the year in which the procedure was concluded. Otherwise, they will be annulled, and a new procedure must be initiated.
- Once the notarial acts are signed, you will be notified by email when the corresponding ID card has been received at this office. Upon receipt, you can process your Argentine passport.
- The procedure for registering the Birth Certificate of the Applicant, the Nationality Option Act, and the National ID are subject to the current consular fee (Decree 1111/2016). Please check the costs here.
