VALIDATING THE DEATH IN ARGENTINA
There are two ways to validate a death that occurred within the jurisdiction of this Consulate General in Argentina:
1. Registering the death at the Consulate
2. Apostille of the death certificate
Registration of the Death
To request the registration of the death, please send scanned copies of the following documentation via email:
- Original apostilled death certificate.
- Original Argentine identification document (DNI, passport, or any other ID) of the deceased.
- Copy of the applicant's DNI or passport.
- Application form.
Once the documentation is verified, and the consular fee is paid, the following steps will be taken:
- The death will be registered in the Civil Registry Book of the Consulate. The original death certificate will be archived.
- The Consulate will also register the death in the Civil Registry of the City of Buenos Aires.
- A consular death certificate will be issued for the applicant, which is fully valid for any procedures in Argentina (such as pensions, inheritances, etc.). In case of loss, a new certificate can be requested at the Consulate or the Civil Registry of the City of Buenos Aires.
- The death will be reported to the National Registry of Persons (RENAPER), ANSES, and the deceased will be removed from the electoral roll.
- Original identification documents will be invalidated and sent to RENAPER.

TRANSPORTATION OF REMAINS
Transportation of Ashes by Air
Generally, airlines allow the transportation of ashes as carry-on luggage. Please check with your airline regarding the necessary documentation.
Typically, airlines require the following apostilled and translated documents in Spanish:
- Death certificate
- Cremation certificate
Transportation of Bodies
Contact the funeral home to inquire about the requirements for transporting bodies.
Generally, the following apostilled and translated documentation is needed:
- Death certificate issued by the competent authority where the death occurred;
- Certificate from the authorized person preparing the body, detailing the method used, certified by competent authority;
- Certificate confirming that the remains are free from infectious diseases, to be presented to the Health Directorate at Borders.
The coffin must be externally identified with an immovable plaque or similar means, in a visible location, indicating the name, age, sex, and destination of the body. Interested parties should confirm with the destination cemetery if a burial authorization will be required.
